2024 WNC Star Awards Nominee — Best Historic Preservation / Restoration
This North Asheville home was built in 1922 and has all the character you’d expect of a Tudor. We loved the challenge of seamlessly blending historic charm with modern comfort — and we were thrilled our clients chose to keep and restore the original light fixtures, floors, wood finishes (stairs, banisters, trim, and window grills), wallpaper, fireplaces, doors, and door hardware. Alongside the restoration, we updated the kitchen, all four bathrooms, HVAC, and electrical, and installed heated tile floors in the master bath.
Preservation ran through the entire project. We removed most of the home’s original doors for safekeeping, protected the stairs and wallpaper during construction, and spent many Saturdays at local antique and salvage shops hunting down era-matching door hardware and light switch panels. It was an honor to make this classic Asheville home feel more like home while preserving the original beauty and charm of the 1920s.
Project Highlights
- Kitchen opened up: peninsula removed, island added, stove relocated, custom cabinetry with hidden refrigerator, dishwasher, and hood, and quartzite countertops with complementary backsplash
- Downstairs full bath converted to a half bath, creating space for pantry cabinets and the concealed refrigerator
- Master bath: 1970s corner tub replaced with a period-appropriate standing shower; settled floors leveled; heated tile floors, new closets with custom shelving, new vanity, ventilation, and lighting
- Upstairs hall bath: original tub preserved, with new shower tile, floor tile, shower nook, vanity, and a closet with stacked washer/dryer
- Former sunroom converted into a private guest bath — original windows kept, walls insulated, and tied into the home’s HVAC
- Study restored rather than remodeled: original wood shelving, panels, floors, and ceiling beams conditioned and preserved
- Original doors, hardware, stairs, and wallpaper protected throughout construction
- Era-matching hardware sourced from local salvage and antique shops
